The window is closing for students to involved with next year’s Student Government Association as an elected official.
Petitioning began Thursday night and will close at noon on Thursday, March 27. Students wishing to run for Senate must pick up an application from the SGA office (Room 214 in the University Center).
To become an SGA Senator, a student must meet the following requirements:
-Enrolled as a full-time student (12 or more hours)
-Passed at least 15 hours prior to nomination.
-Possess a cumulative GPA of 2.0 at time of nomination and during membership.
-Complete a petition consisting of one nominator, and 25 student signatures.
-Have the petition signed by an adviser or college dean to certify grades and hours passed.
Executive Council positions are limited by the Constitution to current SGA Senators and Executive Council members.
“The election process for this year is much better.” President Eric Tolbert said. “I think [electronic voting] will make things easier for students.”
Elections will be held from noon to 5 p.m. in room 111 in the University Center on April 7 and 8. April 9 will be used as a day for run-off elections as needed.
Darla Young, who will be the Elections Commissioner for this election, reminded students “[their] vote will make a difference.”
The online voting system, designed in collaboration with John Abel of the University Center, current Election Commissioner Joey Pierce and members of the Computer Center staff.
“We heard several positive comments from students during the homecoming elections,” Abel said. “The lengthy process of hand counting ballots has been virtually eliminated.”
