Two nationally recognized broadcasters were to be on campus today to make keynote speeches as part of the UTM Communications Department Career Day event. Local high school students are also on hand for tours and awards for broadcast and print media.

Cary Martin, a renowned news anchor and UTM alumni, as the keynote speaker at the annual Communications Career Day awards banquet tonight.

Martin graduated from UTM in 1989 as a Communications major. He is an Emmy award winning news anchor for Little Rock's KATV Channel 7 News. Martin is the anchor for both the 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock news.

His most noteworthy newscast came when he underwent LASIK corrective eye surgery live on the air. During the program, he reported the doctor's progress. His career has taken him from WBBJ in Jackson, Tenn. To WAFF in Huntsville, KVOA in Tucson, and WCMH in Columbus, Ohio, and WKRC in Cincinnati, Ohio.

TBS Broadcaster Pete Van Wieren, the "Voice of the Atlanta Braves," will also be in town to speak during Career Day. He is an eight-time winner of the Georgia Sportscaster of the Year Award from the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Van Wieren is in his 26th season as the play-by-announcer on the Superstation. He has called games for the Atlanta Hawks NBA team, the Atlanta Thrashers NHL franchise, and pre-season games for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

He has also worked for the Cable News Network (CNN).
