ZTA, KA take home first place in Steppin’


Greekfest events concluded Saturday night at the Skyhawk Fieldhouse with Steppin.’ Nine groups competed for the coveted first-place trophy.

The fraternity division with Kappa Alpha Order. They wore formal wear with maroon vests, and began their show with a dramatic fog-filled entrance. Their show featured fast-paced steps and a finale to My Girl with red rose petals tossed to the ladies in the audience.

Alpha Gamma Rho was next on stage wearing formal wear with green vests. They began their show with a Western gunfight, which led into their steps.

Alpha Tau Omega entered from the bleachers to the sound of revving car engines. They wore mechanic suits with their names printed on the back.

Sigma Phi Epsilon finished the fraternity division wearing camouflage pants with black shirts. They performed several steps blindfolded.

The sorority division began with Alpha Omicron Pi whose backdrop was a cityscape lit by Christmas lights. They began their performance with a neon light show and wore black pants with a red stripe down each leg, a black shirt and black jackets.

Chi Omega took the stage next as Women at Work wearing police and hard hats. Their show featured a blindfolded cane routine.

Alpha Delta Pi chose Mardi Gras as their theme. They entered from the bleachers wearing capes and gold masks and began dancing to Lady Marmalade.

Zeta Tau Alpha took the stage next with their oriental-themed show. They wore black pants with a red and black oriental-style shirt. They did a dance with stools to Britney Spears’ Toxic.

Gamma Kappa Pi dedicated their show to a sister who recently returned from serving in Iraq. They wore camouflage shirts, black skirts, and black boots.

Winners in the fraternity division were Kappa Alpha Order in first place and Alpha Gamma Rho who took second place and best of show.

In the sorority division, Zeta Tau Alpha won first place and Alpha Omicron Pi took second place and best of show.

Judges for the event were Natalie Boyd, Willie Campbell, Kenya Fason-Sawyer, Darryl Simmons, and Deborah Boyd.

“All of the groups were fantastic. I know how much hard work, time and dedication went into these routines. They all did a great job,” said Campbell.

Proceeds from Greekfest events benefited the Alyssa Ray of Hope campaign.

This year, they raised a total of $8,000. Alyssa and her family were awarded the check at the Greek banquet on Sunday.
