Zeta raises money for Susan G. Komen with pageant


Adrian Montague of Jackson walked away with the crown Tuesday evening at the third annual Mr. UTM pageant. Montague represented Gamma Kappa Pi sorority.

“We were all so proud,” said Stacie Smith, a member of GKPi and a junior Biology major from Milledgeville. “Adrian represented us very well.”

Levi Duncan of Eustis, Fla., received first runner-up, while second runner-up was awarded to Andy Scott of Dickson. Duncan represented Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Scott represented Kappa Alpha Order.

After receiving the most votes from the audience, Logan Holmes was given the award for Crowd Favorite.. Holmes represented the Rhomates of Alpha Gamma Rho.

The sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha sponsored the Mr. UTM pageant. All proceeds from the event benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The amount of money that will be donated to the Foundation is yet to be determined.

The theme of Mr. UTM 2003 was “Think Pink.” The pageant began at 7 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium with David Belote and Vishenia I. Heury as masters of ceremony for the evening.

The competition began as the contestants modeled their casual attire. The next level of competition was swim wear, followed by formal wear and questions.

Members of Zeta Tau Alpha escorted the contestants through each phase of the pageant.

The door prizes given throughout the evening were made possible by various local businesses. Before the crowning ceremony, the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi received the participation award.

The three judges, Tomi McCutchen Parrish, instructor of Communications; Dr. Lucia Florido, assistant of French; and Dr. Carroll E. Slack, professor of Biology, made the tough decision of who would be crowned Mr. UTM 2003.

The new Mr. UTM received a night out on the town from the Zetas, which included a $15 gift certificate from Kappis Grille and two tickets to the Cine movie theater.

Montague was all smiles as he left with the prizes and the Mr. UTM crown.

The remaining contestants that competed for the Mr. UTM title included Kenneth R. Smith of Memphis, Jake Bynum of Dresden, Clay Billingsley of Union City, Luke Smithson of Christiana, Ben Cope of Union City, Michael J. Pena of Atoka, Eric Alejandro Rivera of Columbia, Logan Holmes of Oakfield, Curtis Harrell of Humboldt, Kevin Butler of Tiptonville, Patrick Parsons of Brighton, Clint Borum of Lawrenceburg, Brian Wood of Jackson, James Kelley of Mayfield, KY, and John Miller of Lebanon.

“It kind of surprised and shocked me,” said Mr. UTM 2003 Adrian Montague, a junior History major from Jackson. “I had no idea that I would actually win. I did it to just to have some fun. It was a good experience, something new and different for me.”
