X-country finishes 18th in meet


The University of Tennessee at Martin finished 18th in the NCAA South Region Cross Country Championship Saturday at Lambert Acres Golf Course in Maryville, Tenn.

Freshman Derrick Kenwright, from Cordova, Tenn., posted the best time for the Skyhawks as he finished 91st out of more than 130 runners. Kenwright finished the 10K in 36:37.36. His average mile was 5:53.

Darrell Lewis and Robby Clapper finished 97 and 98 respectively. Lewis finished in 37:33.17, while Clapper finished in 37:41.37. Jeremy Coltharp finished 104th. His time was 38:06. Running in a pack were Philip Rhodes, Phillip Gordon and Ryan Wilson. The trio finished 109th, 110th and 111th. The top five finishes are added together for the team score. UT Martin finished with 499 points.

Tennessee won the team championship with 51 points, while Alabama was second with 79 points. David Kimani won the individual championship. He finished the 10K in 32:09.91.

Among the other teams competing in the South Region were Belmont, Florida State, UT Chattanooga, South Florida, Georgia, Samford, Alabama State, Troy State and Auburn.

The Skyhawk women did not compete as a team, but two runners completed the 6K run. Shalaine Phaup finished 69th with a time of 24:35.4, while Angelina Gracian was 106th with a time of 26:30.41.

UT Martin cross country coach Jason McKinney said the South Region was a good meet for the Skyhawks because it gave his runners a chance to see how they fared against the top runners in the South.

The South Region was the final meet of the season for the Skyhawks. The indoor track season will get under way Jan. 18 when the Skyhawks compete in the Southern Illinois Open.
