Women's tennis grabs a win

The University of Tennessee at Martin women's tennis team won its first match of the spring season this past weekend in Nashville.

The Skyhawks defeated Lipscomb University 6-1, Friday at the Boyce Tennis Complex.

"We won fairly easy this weekend, but you could tell it was our first match of the year," said Dennis Taylor, UTM tennis coach. "The girls had butterflies at first, but they finished the day by playing excellent tennis."

Senior Ana Bakran, who was listed as questionable with a sprained ankle, did not play in the singles action, but thanks to the help of the team's trainer, Christina Ross, Bakran was able to play doubles and helped pick up a win.

"Christina Ross was the hero of the day for us," Taylor said. "She was able to get Ana ready for her doubles match with Elly (Shearman)."

UTM's Elly Shearman, Jeanne DeWet and Katrina Domela all picked up singles wins.

Bakran teamed up with Shearman for an 8-1 win in doubles action, while the teams of DeWet and Remesh and Domela and Sari Nortje also won in doubles.

The Skyhawk will take some time off before entering Ohio Valley Conference play at Samford, March 12 and at Jacksonville State March 13.
