Women’s basketball win last two games

Senior Amy Watson sank two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to play to give the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks a 60-59 Ohio Valley Conference win over visiting Southeast Missouri State Monday night in Skyhawk Arena.

Watson was fouled by Yashika Sudberry and sent to the line to shoot a pair. The Lynchburg, Tenn. native was calm, cool and collective as she sank both shots with ease. SEMO was able to drive the length of the floor, but at the buzzer Sara Costello's shot drew iron and bounced off the rim.

With the victory, the Skyhawks improve to 10-14 overall and 7-7 in the OVC. The Skyhawks are still tied with Morehead State for fourth place. Morehead upset Eastern Kentucky Monday night, 86-80. The Skyhawks will play Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon in Richmond and then travel to Morehead, Ky. for a Monday night showdown with Morehead State. The top four teams in the OVC earn the right to host a first-round tournament game.

Watson's two free throws to win the game were exclamation points on her stellar effort. She finished with 23 points and seven assists. She was six-of-seven from the free throw line and 8-of-17 from the field.

Southeast Missouri led at the half 29-24 and at one time in the second half led by as many as 12 points. The Skyhawks used a 12-2 run, sparked by sophomore Danielle Page's three-pointer with 6:02 to play, to claw back into the contest. The Skyhawks only other lead in the game came with 16:59 to play when they led 33-31.

SEMO's effort was led by Carina Souza with 13 points and eight rebounds. Souza and SEMO out-rebounded the Skyhawks 43-35, but committed 23 turnovers. SEMO falls to 15-9 overall and 9-4 in the OVC.

The UTMSkyhawks used a 12-3 second-half run to hold off Eastern Illinois 62-58 Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Arena in an Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball game. Eastern Illinois led throughout the first half and enjoyed as much as an eight-point lead with 2:18 to play.

EIU stretched the lead to 11 points with 9:48 to go in the game, but the Skyhawks battled back. Julie Young scored the first points in the Skyhawks' comeback. With 4:48 to go, and down by four, Young canned a layup off an assist from Torre Thomas to cut EIU's lead to 48-46.

Young tied the game at 48-all with a pair of free throws with 4:15 to play. With 3:58 to go in the game, senior Amy Watson converted an EIU turnover into a layup and drew a foul. She sank the free throw to complete the old fashion three-point play and the Skyhawks led 51-48.

EIU managed to take a 54-53 lead with 2:19 to play, but Watson answered again. This time she converted at the free throw line. The Skyhawks never trailed again. Young led the Skyhawks' scoring with 23 points, while Watson finished with 20 points. EIU was led in scoring by Megan Sparks with 12 points and Lauren Dailey with 11 points.

The Skyhawks committed 21 turnovers but made up for them by out-rebounding EIU 33-30 and shooting 100 percent from the free throw line in the second half. Watson was 10-of-11 from the line in the game. The Skyhawks shot 90 percent from the line in the game. The field-goal shooting percentage wasn't as strong for the Skyhawks. The team shot 37 percent in the first half, and 48 percent in the second half. The Skyhawks hit 12-of-25 attempts from the field in the second half.

The Skyhawks improve to 6-6 in the OVC and 9-14 overall, while EIU falls to 4-8 in the league and 5-18 overall.
