Women soar, men falter in tennis action


The UTM women's tennis team improved to 3-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 5-2 victory over Morehead State Wednesday afternoon at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex.

The Skyhawks claimed the doubles point as the team of Katrina Domela and Sari Nortje defeated Alex Becka and Verena Baernwick, 8-4.

The No. 2 doubles team of Elly Shearman and Ana Bakran turned back Georgia Vanos and Ariana Gracia-Medrano, 8-1. In singles action, Nortje, Domela and Gayatri Ramesh picked up wins. Bakran won at No. 6 singles by default.

Morehead State's Becka defeated Shearman at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Morehead State's Baernwick defeated Jeanne de Wet at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

The Skyhawks are 6-4 overall and return to action Saturday, March 27, when they travel to Charleston, Ill., to face host Eastern Illinois.

The UTM women's tennis blanked Austin Peay, 7-0, Monday afternoon at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex.

Elly Shearman won the No. 1 singles match for the Skyhawks, defeating Austin Peay's Jessica Mills, 6-3, 6-1. Jeanne de Wet won at No. 2 singles, while Sari Nortje won at No. 3 singles.

Katrina Domela, from Jawa Barat, Indonesia, won at No. 4 singles, while Gayatri Ramesh won at No. 5 singles. Ana Bakra completed the sweep with a win at No. 6 singles.

The Skyhawks won the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches. Domela and Nortje played No. 1 doubles, while Bakran and Shearman played No. 2 doubles. Ramesh and de Wet played No. 3 singles.

The Skyhawk women won the doubles point against Stetson and swept the singles competition with the exception of the No. 3 match, where Domela suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback to Stetson's Jackie Bohannon.

The Skyhawk women return to action Wednesday, March 24 when they host Morehead State in an OVC match. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Morehead State denied host UTM men’s team an Ohio Valley Conference tennis win Tuesday afternoon at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex.

The visiting Eagles claimed a 5-2 win over the Skyhawks. With the loss the Skyhawks fall to 0-3 in the OVC and 2-10 overall.

The Skyhawks return to action this afternoon when they host Austin Peay. Action is set for 2 p.m.

The Skyhawks will continue OVC play Saturday, March 27 when they travel to Charleston, Ill., to face host Eastern Illinois. Morehead State won the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches to claim the doubles point.

The Skyhawk No. 1 doubles team, Gustavo Anzola and Adolfo Anzola, defeated Morehead State's Greg Johnstone and Damian Storti, 8-4.

The Skyhawks picked up their two points in singles action where Oltion Mollaymeri and Lucas Tregansin won. Mollaymeri defeated Morehead State's Jacob McLeod, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. Tregansin beat Morehead State's Louis Orieux, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

In the closest match of the afternoon, Skyhawk Daniel McGuire suffered a 7-6, 5-7 loss to Morehead State's Kim Kachel at No. 3 singles. Kachel won the super tiebreaker, 15-13.
