Winter weather hits West Tennessee

A flurry of winter weather hit West Tennessee Wednesday night. The storm brought in upwards of three inches of snow in some areas.

The snow continued to fall throughout Thursday and into the night.

Because of above-freezing temperatures, some of the snow melted immediately but the amount was still enough to leave a significant blanket.

A snow advisory from the National Weather Service is still in effect through Friday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement regarding driving conditions for Friday and the weekend.

With temperatures dropping below freezing overnight, drivers are advised to be aware of icy roads.

Any roads that were wet on Thursday as a result of the snow are likely to be frozen over Friday and possibly into the weekend.

The statement asks that drivers drive with extreme caution, reduce driving speeds and leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you.

Remember to leave extra time to reach your destination and avoid sudden breaking or acceleration.

Also, be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. This is the third week in four weeks that the Martin area has see snowfall.

Classes at UTM were cancelled Jan. 16-17 because of snow. It was the first time in recent memory that the action of calling off classes was taken.

Some schools in West Tennessee, such as Dyersburg State Community College and Jackson State Community College, opted to go to snow schedules for Thursday and Friday. West Tennessee public school systems throughout the region closed, giving students some extra days off. This is a more common action among public school districts because of the dangers associated with operating a bus in snowy and/or icy conditions.

Some area businesses closed shop for the day either because of lack of transportation or power outages caused by the snow. Students at UTM took advantage of the time out in the snow for snowball fights or building snowmen.

A common sight while driving through Martin on Thursday were snowmen standing on the side of the road. Some students got together and built a snow fort outside of Austin Peay Residence Hall.

Be sure to check with the National Weather Service or The Pacer Online for additional weather alerts or advisories.
