What’s the big deal? It was just a boob!

Calm down people, what you saw last week is something that most college students have seen before.

Sunday’s Super Bowl XXXVIII was a flash in the pan, well it was a flash at least.

The game between the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots was a nail-biter to the very end. As it turns out, the Patriots beat the Panthers 32-29, thanks to a last minute field goal. I say thanks because, if it weren’t for that field goal, the game would have gone into overtime, and I was tired of watching the game anyway. I’m not a huge football fan but I do enjoy watching the different playoff games.

The highlights of the Super Bowl are the commercials plus the pre-game, half-time and closing entertainment.

The biggest thing about this year’s Super Bowl was not the game nor the commercials. It was the half-time performance of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. We all know what happened with that performance.

Who would have thought that seeing a breast compared to what has been seen on other stations would cause such a problem? The flash lasted just a few seconds and both performers have apologized profusely since then for the incident so I think it’s time to let bygones be bygones.

While CBS is a regular stations and strive to maintain family-rated shows on their channel, this is the price that they had to pay to let the red-headed step child of television, MTV, produce the half-time show. All decisions have consequences, whether they be good or bad.

MTV has said that it had no prior knowledge of the stunt, yet they are being blamed for it all. Granted, MTV did do the half-time show and should take full responsibility for anything that occurs, but to the extent that CBS and the FCC are taking is ridiculous!

Reports have stated that all CBS affiliates who broadcasted the game will be fined. I think that is going too far. Fining MTV, Jackson and Timberlake would be enough but don’t make little CBS stations around the country pay for something they had no knowledge of until after it happened. MTV, Jackson and Timberlake can afford the fine but I’m almost sure that little affiliates would barely be able to.

To prevent a situation happening like this in the future, they should have a longer tape delay, which is what has been suggested. There is hardly anything live on television because it all is tape delayed in order to do those wonderful bleep sounds (Thanks Osbourne clan) that we all hear so much on television.

Amazing how much more hoopla the general public can do about seeing the breast of an old pop star than they are about some guy bursting onto the field wearing only a g-string? Though the streaker wasn’t broadcasted, what kind of media coverage would the streaker have had it been televised? Guess we’ll never know.

Until next time, keep reading and get to writing!
