Wahlberg sets school record, Skyhawks come up short

UTM sophomore quarterback Brady Wahlberg set two school passing records here tonight at Paul Snow Stadium, but it wasn't enough for the Skyhawks to knock off perennial power Jacksonville State.

The host Gamecocks posted a 34-24 OVC win over the Skyhawks as Wahlberg completed a school-record 44 passes and attempted a school-record 65 passes. The sophomore from Panama City, Fla., threw for 369 yards. He was intercepted twice.

Wahlberg's 369 yards of passing is the most for a Skyhawk quarterback in a game since John Repella threw for 346 in 1998 against Middle Tennessee State.

"We probably didn't want to come in to this game thinking about that, but we got behind the eight ball and had to play catch up," said Matt Griffin, UTM's first-year head coach.

Jacksonville State senior Kory Chapman set a new school rushing record as he led the Gamecocks to the win. Chapman had 29 carries for 298 yards and a touchdown. He entered Saturday's game as the OVC's fifth-leading rusher with 396 yards.

Jacksonville State jumped out front 13-0 in the first quarter and weather another Skyhawk comeback in the fourth quarter to hang on for the win.

The Skyhawks cut the lead to 13-7 in the second quarter when Wahlberg hit Andrew Staten with a 17-yard pass. Brent Harris added the PAT. The scoring drive covered 71 yards on seven plays in 3:09.

The Gamecocks built a 13-0 lead with two first quarter touchdowns. They took their opening possession and scored six plays later as Raynodd Zeine socred on a 2-yard run. The point after failed.

The Skyhawks attempted to answered the score with a nine-play drive that moved the ball from the UTM 16 yard line to the Jax State 49. Wahlberg hooked up with Taurean Stephens at the 33 yard line, but Stephens fumbled the ball.

Jax State took over and went 67 yards for its second score of the game. Maurice Mullins connected with Craig Agee for a 22-yard TD pass.

UTM falls to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the OVC, while Jax State improves to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Skyhawks return to action Saturday at Hardy Graham Stadium when they host Samford University in OVC action. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
