Volleyball team splits with APSU, TSU; returns home this weekend for game


UTM volleyball team earned an Ohio Valley Conference split Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over host Austin Peay. The Skyhawks dropped their Friday night conference match, 3-0, at host Tennessee State.

With the split, the Skyhawks are 2-2 in the OVC standings. All four game have been played on the road.

The Skyhawks piled up 25 team blocks en route to a 3-2 win over Austin Peay Saturday afternoon. Sarah Jett had eight block assists and hit .486, while Kathryn Sprague recorded five solo blocks and seven block assists.

Junior Jamie Rollins had a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. The Skyhawks lost the first game 24-30, but won the second and third games.

Austin Peay won the fourth game 30-25 to force the fifth and deciding game.

In the fifth game, the Skyhawks took charge early and never looked back en route to the 15-11 victory.

Austin Peay’s Kristie Kidman and Caroline Frens turned in double-doubles. Kidman had 11 kills and 15 digs, while Frens had 11 kills and 13 digs.

Defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Tennessee State held off the Skyhawks 3-0 Friday night in Nashville.

The Skyhawks dropped the first game 30-16, but fought back in game two before losing 30-23. TSU claimed the win with a 30-26 victory in the third game.

Both teams had 44 digs in the match, but TSU turned in a .269 hitting percentage. The Skyhawks hit .286 in the second game, but finished the match hitting just .065.

Junior Anna Gautreau had 11 digs in the match to lead the Skyhawks, while Meesha Jackson led TSU with 13 kills and a .706 hitting percentage.

The Skyhawks return to action Friday, Oct. 6 when they host Eastern Kentucky in Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The first set is set for 7 p.m. The Skyhawks also will host Morehead State at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.
