Vanguard presents 'School House Rock Live!'

On Thursday night, the Vanguard Theatre presented their version of the pop culture phenomenon School House Rock to a full house. School House Rock Live! is based on the Emmy Award-winning 1970’s Saturday morning cartoon.

The lively musical was held in the Harriet Fulton Theatre. Scott Fergusen, the original choreographer and creator of School House Rock Live! has been on campus aiding with the production. He spent two weeks working on the production with Vanguard and the students earlier this semester.

The performance contained many of the hit songs that we all grew up with. Verbs, nouns, adjectives, bills becoming laws, conjunctions, stars, women’s rights…you name it, the seven member cast had a fun way to teach or remind you all about it.

“The show was entertaining, educational, and full of energy,” said Sarah Beth Diviney, a senior Communications major from Greenfield.

The upbeat ensemble consisted of Eric Brewer, a senior from Sharon; Derrick Casey, a freshman from Humboldt; Mary Cheers, a senior from Memphis; Megan Gallup, a freshman from Erin; Jennifer Horbelt, from Houston, Texas; Ryan Leyhue, a senior from Mayfield and Bethany Wintermute, a senior from Selmer.

The cast had a little surprise to deal with on opening night. On Wednesday night, during dress rehearsal, Cheers suffered a knee injury. Knowing that the show had to go on, the cast had to work around the unexpected prop now on the stage: crutches under the arms of one of the main characters.

The production staff included: director Ken Zimmerman, production designer Douglas Cook, costumer Melanie Hollis, stage manager Jessie Blanchard, light board operator Joyce Harris and sound operator Timothy Barrington.

Zimmerman had only one thing to say after Thursday’s opening night performance, “I am extremely proud of them all!”

The show will continue to hit the stage Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. The box office opens each night two hours prior the show. Call 7000 for more information.
