UTM's Dani Myrick ranks among top soccer players in the country

In the final statistics released in the recent edition of The NCAA News, University of Tennessee at Martin freshman Dani Myrick ranked among the top 20 soccer players in the nation in points per game and goals per game.

Myrick finished 18th in the nation in points per game with 2.11 as well as tied for 19th in the nation in goals per game with 0.84.

She was the only player from the Ohio Valley Conference to place on either list.

Myrick is a 5-5 freshman forward from Midwest City, Okla. She started in all 19 games for the Skyhawks, scoring 16 goals with seven assists.

She also chipped in seven goals and three assists in conference play.

“I’m amazed,” said Myrick. “But I couldn’t have done it without my team.” While looking to next season, Myrick said, “I hope to do better next season because I don’t feel like I really had that great of a season.”

“Dani has proven to be what we thought she would be,” said UT Martin head soccer coach Nathan Pifer. “She was recruited by a lot of places and she chose UT Martin. One thing nice about Dani is not only is she a good player in showing well out on the field but she does it in a team attitude.

“She gives credit to her teammates for everything and she always is working harder because she wants to be better.” The Skyhawks had their best season in the team’s five-year history by putting up a 9-7-3 record. Tennessee-Martin was 3-2-1 in the OVC.

The Skyhawks lose three seniors from the 2002 season and should return a strong nucleus for the fall. The team will play in a spring tournament later in the semester.
