UTM wins OVC Championship

Skyhawks will host OVC Tournament


The Skyhawks swept Tennessee State 3-0 Tuesday night to claim their second consecutive Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship. UTM im-proves to 14-1 in the OVC and 1-5 overall for the season.

The Skyhawks return to action tonight with their last match of the season against Tennessee Tech. Action begins at 7 p.m. in Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

Six Skyhawk seniors will be honored at the match. Rachel Ahlers, Stephanie Bauer, Stefanie Dubach, Natalie Klevan, Lindsey Stock and Lindsey Vicknair will all be playing in their last regular season home match.

The Tigers (13-19, 0-14 in the OVC) never challenged the Skyhawks as UTM cruised to the win, 30-16, 30-10 and 30-23.

UTM had a .337 hitting percentage against Tennessee State. Stock played in two games and had a .857 hitting percentage.

Heather Kea had a .421 hitting percentage with 10 kills in the match. Sophomore Leigh Reiniche also had 10 kills in the match.

UTM now turns its attention to Tennessee Tech for the final match of the season.

Tech is 8-16 and 5-9 in the OVC and is still in contention for a tournament position with the top six teams advancing.

The Golden Eagles are led by 6-0 senior Maggie Stern. Stern is averaging 4.30 kills per game with a .259 hitting percentage.

She also leads the team in digs with 3.93 per game.

Junior Annette Kupka has contributed on the offense with a .249 hitting percentage on 153 kills.

Nancy Meyer leads the team in assists with 6.61 per game. Four teams have already clinched spots in the OVC tournament. Morehead State (12-3) and Southeast Missouri (12-3) are vying for the second-seed position. Morehead State finishes its season against winless Tennessee State while Southeast Missouri will play defending tournament champion, Eastern Illinois. Morehead State would win out if a tie occurred between it and Southeast Missouri. The Eagles beat the Otahkians in their two regular season meetings.

Riding a three-match winning streak, Murray State has qualified for the tournament. Abbi Gui, a late-season addition to the Racer squad, has made the difference. In her six matches she is averaging 5.16 kills per game with a .358 hitting percentage. Paige Sun has also played consistently for Murray State with 4.63 kills per game, hitting .216.

Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech, Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois still have a shot of taking one of the remaining two spots.

Action begins at 4 p.m. Thursday with first-round action.

Action will continue throughout the weekend. All matches are being played in Skyhawk Fieldhouse. Admission is free to students with a valid student I.D.
