UTM will play Murray State in semifinals


The Ohio Valley Conference volleyball tournament enters its second day with semifinal action this afternoon in Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

Action is set to begin at 4 p.m. with third-seeded Southeast Missouri (19-11, 13-3 in the OVC) playing second-seeded Morehead State (20-11, 13-3 in the OVC). Top-seeded UTM (22-5, 15-1 in the OVC) will play at 7 p.m. against fourth-seed Murray State (12-11, 10-6 in OVC).

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. College students with a valid I.D. can enter free of charge.

UTM and Morehead State received byes to the semifinals with Murray State playing Eastern Kentucky (12-18, 6-10 in OVC) and Southeast Missouri playing Austin Peay (10-20, 6-10 in the OVC) in the first round.

Murray State played a close game one with Eastern Kentucky and dropped the second game but came out strong, dominating the Colonels in games three and four to take the 3-1 win.

Murray State freshman standout Abbi Gui finished with 23 kills and 16 digs. She capped off the double-double with a .465 hitting percentage.

Paige Sun also posted a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs. Eastern Kentucky hit .117 in the match and racked up 18 block assists.

Southeast Missouri came out with a convincing 3-0 sweep over Austin Peay in the day’s second match.

SEMO came out with a close 30-26 win in game one and followed with 30-20 wins in games two and three.

SEMO’s Emily Johnson and Bobbie Carlile earned double-doubles after in the match. Johnson had 15 kills and 17 digs, while Carlile had 19 kills and 14 digs. Jessica Houpt led the team with a .412 hitting percentage for that match.

Southeast Missouri had 10 service aces in the match.

Morehead State will begin today’s matches, playing Southeast Missouri. Morehead State swept SEMO 3-0 in their first meeting of the season in Cape Girardeau, Mo. A tougher Otahkian team played at Morehead State, extending the match to five games, but Morehead State still came out with the 3-2 win.

UTM went 2-0 against Murray State this season. The Skyhawks swept the Racers in Murray but a tougher team came and took UTM to five games in the skyhawks 3-2 win, Oct. 25.

The big change for Murray State this season has been Gui.

She joined the Racers midway through the season and has made a big impact on the team.

The winners of today’s matches will advance to the conference championship at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Fieldhouse.

The tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
