UTM took on Pepsi Challenge

The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team finished 14th in the Pepsi Challenge hosted by Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. this past weekend.

Oklahoma City University won the three-day event at the 6,550-yard, par-72 Highland Springs Country Club. Sophomore Zach Jaworski, from Cordova, Tenn., led the Skyhawks with a three-day total 230 followed by junior Andy Burris, from Athens, Tenn., with a 231. Freshmen Reise McCoy, from Nashville, Tenn., shot a 238, while junior Clint Rochelle, from Centerville, Tenn., shot a 240. Junior Scott Carpenter from Martin shot a 244.

“This was a difficult golf course,” said Jerry Carpenter, UT Martin golf coach. “It was a shot makers golf course. If you did not hit a good tee shot you were in trouble.”

The Skyhawks were in 13th position after day two but a lackluster performance in the third round caused the team to fall to 14.

“In the final round no one played up to their potential,” Carpenter said. “Realistically we could have finished in the top ten this week.”

Ohio Valley Conference rivals Murray State University finished second in the tournament and Southeast Missouri State finished 11th. Murray State’s Jamie Frasier took home the medalist honors with an even-par 216.

The Skyhawk golfers will be on the road again Oct. 28 and 29 at the Temple Hills Collegiate Invitational in Nashville.
