UTM tennis player takes first place in MTSU Fall Invitational

UTM's Ana Bakran defeated Suzanne Jones of Tennessee State 6-2, 3-6 (10-8) in singles action Sunday in the Middle Tennessee Women's Fall Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn. With the victory, Bakran claimed the Flight C Singles championship.

"This was probably the best women's tennis I have seen us play in awhile at UTM," said Dennis Taylor, UTM's head tennis coach.

UTM's Gayatri Ramesh finished in the top four of singles action, before losing to Nicola Slater of Southern Mississippi, while teammate Elly Shearman advanced to second-round play in singles action Saturday.

UTM's Remesh and Jeanne de Wet finished second in the doubles division, falling to Slater and Kristen Noble of Southern Mississippi 8-4.

The team of Shearman and Bakran made it to the top 16 before falling to Memphis' Andrea Fiechtinger and Alexandra Tjoie.

"We beat some excellent competition in this tournament," Taylor said.

The Skyhawks next match will be Oct. 23-26 in Winston Salem, N.C. at the Rolex Regional.
