UTM Student to appear before grand jury

Weakley County General Sessions Court has bound UTM student Scott Payne, 21, of Lynnville, Tenn., to appear before the grand jury in September. Payne was arrested May 5 after charges of rape were filed by a female UTM student.

According to reports from Martin Police Department, Payne took the victim to her off-campus apartment at 2 a.m. May 4. Payne told the police that he engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim when they arrived at the apartment. The victim told police that she did not consent to the act and that she was extremely intoxicated.

At the time of the arrest, Payne told police that “he felt like he had not done the right thing afterwards because of her intoxicated state.”

Payne posted his $1,000 bond and first appeared before Weakley County General Sessions Court on May 5 for his arraignment. The preliminary hearing took place on June 17 and, at the decision of Judge Tommy Moore, the case will be heard before the grand jury in September.

The Pacer will continue to follow this case.
