UTM Spring Sing a hit showcasing local musical talent

Spring is here along with the promises of blooming flowers and fun in the sun, but that’s not the only thing that spring brings to us. Spring brings a lot of singing.

The 24th annual Spring Sing was held Sun., March 20. The program started at 1:30 p.m. and ended around 5 p.m. Entertainers from all over west Tennessee came to the Vanguard Theatre to perform gospel music and some true, original country music.

The Appleton Family started it off by playing the national anthem. The mother played the cello, the father played an acoustic guitar and their 12-year-old daughter played the fiddle, producing a down home country sound. They played a wide range of music, from an old Celtic piece called “Appalachian Mountain” to “Rock Around the Clock.”

Every 30 minutes a different group or a solo act would perform for the audience. Most of the groups played with only an acoustic guitar or a piano for their music and one group even sang a cappella.

The show showcased different styles of Christian music and gospel put together by Dr. Walter Haden, an English professor at UTM. The entertainers performed for no payment except the payment of giving glory to God.

Randy Pigg and his mother, Martha, enjoy going to different concerts such as this one. Since they live in Union City, they enjoy going to the concert that is held at Reelfoot Lake every year. “It’s a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon,” Randy Pigg said.

Some of the other artists included the Weakley County Melody Makers and McDonald Craig, a veteran from the Korean War.
