UTM spring enrollment, applications increase

Spring enrollment and applications for the 2004 fall semester are both up at UTM compared to the same time last year.

Current enrollment information was compiled by the university's Office of Institutional Research, while application reports are made by the Division of Student Affairs.

The official spring semester enrollment is 5,556 students, an increase of 99 students compared to spring semester 2003. The total includes 5,142 undergraduates and 414 graduate students.

Applications for fall semester 2004 through Jan. 30 were 1,434, which is an increase of 350 applications compared to the same time last year.

All five colleges within the university show significant application increases, said Dr. Katie High, vice chancellor for student affairs.

Since the Jan. 30 applications report, more than 100 additional applications have been received by the university, and High said many more are expected.

"We are pleased with the number of good students applying to attend UT Martin," High said.

"Part of the increase can be attributed to the new lottery scholarships, but the university's decision last year to raise admission requirements also appeals to prospective students."

High said the higher admission standards are evident in fall 2004 applications. As of Jan. 30, the average ACT score for applicants stood at 22.03 compared to 21.81 this time last year.

Looking ahead to fall semester, the university has announced Student Orientation and Advance Registration sessions for beginning freshmen.

The SOAR events, all held in Martin, are: April 17; June 4-5; June 24-25; and July 15-16.
