UTM splits weekend soccer games

The UTM Skyhawk Soccer team split a pair of games at the Skyhawk Invitational Tournament this weekend, beating Arkansas-Little Rock 4-1 and losing to Stephen F. Austin 2-1.

The Skyhawks first match pitted them against a tough team from Stephen F. Austin State University of Texas.

The Skyhawks fought the good fight, but came up short against the visiting Ladyjacks

Midfielder Lauren Matkin struck first for SFASU with an unassisted goal at 26:25 in the game.

The defense for both teams settled in again and the first half ended with a 1-0 Ladyjack lead.

This gave the Skyhawks a commanding 3-0 lead going into halftime.

UALR came out firing in the second half, but the UTM defense was just too strong. UALR Defender Lora Thomas scored the only goal of the day for the Trojans in the opening minutes of the second half.

The Skyhawks then went back on the offensive. Sophomore Midfielder Rachel Callahan struck next for UTM with a goal off a header by Christina Moore at 60:24 in the game to give UTM the final goal and take them to a 4-1 win.
