UTM shooters use depth to beat Morehead State

The UTM rifle team won the small bore competition against Morehead State Oct. 23, with a combined score of 2,233, while the Tennessee-Martin Women’s team was second with 2,189 points.

Morehead State’s men shot 2,184, while the Morehead State women shot 2,088.

In the air rifle competition, the Skyhawks’ Mixed team came out on top with 1,490, while the women’s team shot 1,460. Morehead State’s women shot 1,452 in air rifle and the Morehead State men shot 1,448.

“With the exception of one great small bore performance, we did not have any exceptional scores,” Beard said.

“It was a solid team performance and we had more depth than Morehead State.”

That one exceptional score belonged to Carson Kuehn who shot a personal best 573 in the small bore.

Beard said he could have used any of his non-squadded alternates and Tennessee-Martin would have still had a winning score in the match against Morehead State.

Jaymi Collar led the Tennessee-Martin Mixed team with a 575 in the smallbore. Rebhan led the Skyhawk Mixed team in air rifle with a 384.

Freshman Emily Yocum led the Tennessee-Martin Women’s team with a 556 in the smallbore, while Braun led the Skyhawk women’s team in air rifle with a 373.

The Skyhawk shooters return to action this weekend when they travel to Xavier University for the Walsh Invitational. This competition will wrap up the UTM Fall rifle season. The team starts back up again on Jaunary 25 at home.
