UTM shooter finishes tourney

Sophomore Jennie Fladebo finished 24th in the NCAA Individual Air Rifle Championship, March 12, at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Ky.

Fladebo shot a 372 out of a possible 400. Murray State's Morgan Hicks shot a 398 and won the national championship title.

Fladebo shot a 390 in the recent NCAA Sectionals at Murray State to qualify for the NCAA championship.

Fladebo was the first person from Tennessee-Martin to compete in the NCAA rifle championship since 2000 when James "Montana" Micheletti captured a berth in the championship.

The last Tennessee-Martin marksman to win the NCAA air rifle championship was Rob Harbison, who shot a 392 in 1987. Harbison was a three-time All-American and represented the United States in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

As a team, Tennessee-Martin finished 20th in the nation. The Skyhawk marksmen finished 13th in the nation in air rifle.

Alaska-Fairbanks was the national champion. Tennessee-Martin has finished ranked among the top 20 teams in the nation for 21 of the past 22 years.

Last year was the only season the Tennessee-Martin rifle team, coached by Beard, did not finish in the top 20. The Skyhawks lost nine members of that team to graduation. Seven of the nine members on the team were freshmen
