UTM romps Arkansas State, 5-2


Within the first six minutes, Sophomore Christina Moore led the Skyhawk soccer team to a 2-0 advantage in route to a 5-2 win over Arkansas State.

UTM will return to action in the Skyhawk invitational at 4 p.m. today against Stephen F. Austin State University.

Moore scored her first goal by header off a corner kick by Freshman Dani Myrick within two minutes.

She then went unassisted in a breakaway to put another goal in the net before six minutes into the game.

Sophomore Amy King went on to score another goal for UTM off an assist by Myrick 18 minutes into the game.

The Skyhawks finished the half with a score of 3-1.

UTM came out strong again in the second half.

Myrick went unassisted to put the ball in the net off a ball lost from the goalkeeper 17 minutes into the second half.

Freshman Katie Jackson scored off a drop by King at 33 minutes in the second half to bring add another point and make the score 5-2.

Head Coach Nathan Pifer is excited about the remaining season.

“Our Goal has been to get better each game, we may have a young team but we've come to compete,”said Pifer They may be young, but they are definitely physical. Freshman Katie Hausauer brought no less than three girls to the ground, and received a yellow card 76 minutes into the game.

Dual goal scorer Moore was quick to spread the credit of Sunday's victory.

“We played well as a team,” said Moore.

The Skyhawk soccer team is now 2-1 for the season with another game to host tonight against Stephen F. Austin State University. Kickoff for tonight's game will be 4 p.m.

UTM will also play the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Sunday at 2 p.m. at Skyhawk Field to round out the weekend tournament.

There is no admission fee to any of the weekend matches.
