UTM Rodeo action coming up next week


An Ozark Region championship, nine individual titles and two berths each for men's and women's rodeo teams will be on the line as Dodge presents the UTM's 35th Annual Spring College Rodeo Thursday, April 10, in the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex on campus.

The championship finals, sponsored this year by Vanderbilt Sports Medicine, gets under way at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12. The top 10 contestants in each event will compete for cash prizes and Ozark Region individual championships.

The UTM rodeo is the season finale for Ozark Region teams and teams are trying to finish first or second in order to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyo. Wednesday, April 9

Join Rodeo Booster Club members for a Crawfish Supper at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, at the American Legion on Central Avenue in Martin.

The cookout is free to all rodeo booster club members. New members can join and former members can renew their memberships.

Annual dues are $10 or $25 for a family. Everyone is invited to experience great fellowship and great food at this cookout which serves as a membership drive for the booster club. On the menu are crawfish, corn on the cob and new potatoes. Hamburgers and hot dogs will also be available.

Thursday, April 10 Thursday is Bargain Night for the first performance of the UTM Spring Rodeo. All tickets for Thursday night's performance are $5 each, and children ages 9 and under get in free with a paid adult. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. performance sponsored by Martin Anesthesia Group, Inc. Rodeo fans will also have a chance to enter a drawing to win a MTD riding lawn mower. If your name is drawn and you can make a horseshoe ringer from 40 feet away, you win. Friday, April 11 The Martin Paving Company sponsors Friday night's second rodeo performance.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and timed events and rough stock events including bull riding get under way at 7:30 p.m. Nationally-known professional rodeo announcer Cheyenne Pipkin will call all the action.

If no one wins the MTD lawn mower Thursday night, a second drawing will be held. Saturday, April 12

A countywide barbecue and a celebrity auction will kick off championship Saturday. The barbecue starts at 11 a.m., at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex. Donations will be accepted at the door for barbecue plates that include barbecue, baked beans, chips and a drink.

The annual celebrity auction gets started at noon. Among the items to be auctioned are autographed memorabilia from celebrities in music, sports and the entertainment industries. A silent auction will also be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights during rodeo performances, with special Friday and Saturday night auctions before rodeo performances. Come see the best of the best as the Vanderbilt Sports Medicine Championship Finals get under way at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets for the rodeo are on sale now at several Northwest Tennessee locations, including Woods Communications Cellular Source and Weakley Farmers Co-op in Martin; Fairview Saddlery in Dresden; The Cowboy Store in Clarksburg; Weakley Farmers Co-op in Gleason; Woods Communication Cellular Source in Union City; and Brawner Boots in Greenfield.

Advance ticket prices are $7 each for adults. Children ages 5 and under are free with a paid adult. UTMstudents, high school students and all other children are $5 each. A weekend pass good for all three nights of the rodeo, April 10-12, is also available for $15.

Advance tickets are good for Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12. Performances start each night at 7:30. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The rodeo opens at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 10. All tickets are $5 each and are only available at the door. Children, ages 9 and under, are free with a paid adult. General admission tickets for Friday and Saturday performances are $8 each for adults; $6 each for UTM and all students; and children, ages 5 and under, are free with a paid adult.
