UTM plays host to first-ever Skyhawk Invitational Tournament


The University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Stephen F. Austin State University and Murray State University all travel to Martin this weekend for the first-ever Skyhawk Invitational.

All games will be played at Skyhawk Field on the west side of the UTM campus.

Play begins Friday at 2 p.m. as UALR and Murray State face off. UTM will play Stephen F. Austin plays Stephen F. Austin at 4 p.m.

Tournament play will resume on Sunday with Stephen F. Austin playing Murray State at noon with UTM and UALR following at 2 p.m.

The Skyhawks enter the weekend with a 2-1 record, which is the best start in the team’s history.

Dani Myrick, Sherrie Weeks, Christina Moore and Amy King have stepped up to lead the Skyhawks through the early part of the season.

Myrick, Weeks and Moore have seven shots each with Moore leading the way with two goals.

King has two goals and one assist on four shots. Myrick has one goal and three assists while Weeks has one assist. Rachel Callahan and Katie Jackson have contributed one goal each for the Skyhawks.

Cary Scheufler has spent the majority of the time in the goal for UTM.

Scheufler has picked up 20 saves, allowing six goals for the season.

UALR is showing great improvement from last season. In 2001 the Trojans finished the season 0-17-1 and 0-8 in their conference.

UALR has began the 2002 season undefeated with a 3-0 record. UALR has out scored its opponents 10-2 with one shutout on the season.

Leading the way for the Trojans is Dee Dee Beyhan with five goals and two assists on 10 shots.

Heather Tarar has two goals with Jennifer Heinrichs, Lora Thomas and Brittany Axford contributing one each. Heather Friedman has spent the most time in the goal. She has picked up 13 saves, allowing two goals.

Murray State enters the weekend with a 3-1 record with the lone loss coming from Tennessee, 6-1.

A young group in sophomores Kristin Robertson, Theresa Reedy and Jackie Thomas are leading the Racers. Robertson has four goals and two assists on 11 shots while Reedy and Thomas have three goals each.

Sarah Walsh and Karen Fitzharris have split time in the goal, combining for 12 saves, allowing nine goals.

The Racers are coming off of an 8-9-2 record last season, finishing fourth in the OVC with a 2-3 league mark. Murray State University is in Murray, Ky.

Rounding out the teams is Stephen F. Austin State University from Nacagdoches, Texas. The Ladyjacks enter the tournament 0-3 on the season, being shutout in all three matches. SFASU is coming off of a 10-8-1 record in 2001. The Ladyjacks return eight starters from last season’s squad.

SFASU is led this season by freshman Sara Hernandez with five shots. Anna Steed and Amber Wilson have three shots each. Freshman Natascia Michalezki has manned the goal for the Ladyjacks. She has 31 saves on the season, allowing seven goals.
