UTM Golfers place in top twenty at Tri-State


After finding itself in the back of the pack after the first round of the Tri-State Classic on Monday, Murray State surged ahead in the second and third rounds to win the golf tournament. North Alabama's Justin Regan had the top individual score with a 1-under-par 215.

Five golfers were named to the all-tournament team. They were: Regan (North Alabama), Sandy McClintock (Western Illinois), Evan Frederick (Saint Louis), Kent Phillips (Southeast Missouri) and Will Cox (Murray State).

Murray State blew the compeition away in the third round, shooting a tournament-low 282. This gave the Racers an 879 and a 7-stroke lead over their closest opponent. Southeast Missouri came in second with an 886 with North Alabama close behind with an 887.

Western Illinois came in fourth with an 888 while Saint Louis shot 890. Belmont led the second half of the pack with an 892, coming in sixth. Lipscomb had an 898, followed by Missouri-Kansas City with a 903. UT Martin shot a 909 with Bradley bringing up the rear with 921. Tennessee-Martin hosted the two-day tournament at Winfield Dunn Golf Course at Pickwick Dam State Park.

Two UT Martin golfers made it into the top-20. Reise Kelly shot a 5-over-par 221 to tie for 11th place while Clint Rochelle had a 224 to tie for 17th. Zach Jaworski was close behind Rochelle with a 225. Heath Prescott had a 229 while Jamie Ball and Scott Carpenter both shot 236.
