UTM Dance Ensemble examines pop culture

The UTM Department of Visual and Theatre Arts presents the UTM Dance Ensemble in "Uptown. Downtown. Out of Town." at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 28, and 8 p.m. on Monday, March 29, in the Harriet Fulton Theatre.

Assistant professor of dance, Alix Miller Gausline, along with other guest choreographers, has formed a dance concert examining “high art” and pop culture and where these two intersect.

"Uptown. Downtown. Out of Town." hosts a variety of styles and tastes. The concert will take the audience on a regional and cultural tour with moves and music.

The modern piece, "Motown Metal," describes the city of Detroit with the body’s suspense and release.

"New Orleans Triptych" portrays the fun and noise of Mardi Gras, while revealing the underbelly of the after-party that is not seen by the general public.

Guest choreographer, Erin Healan, from the Tsunami Dance Company, has contributed a piece featuring the music of the Beastie Boys.

Ivan Pulinkala, guest choreographer, has brought a modern trio from Murray State University.

"Reptition and Redemption" is choreographed by Tatonia Dunlap.

The dance ensemble’s members include Erin Barger, Audrey Chapman, Amy Hedstrom, Delinda Scarborough, Amy Mulcahy, Justin Paschall, Tori Shaw, Paige Thurman, Liz Thomason, Kathryn Evans and Tatonia Dunlap.

General admission is $5 and UTM students get in free. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 7400.
