Track team opens season at SIU

The University of Tennessee at Martin track team opened its 2003 indoor season by setting several personal records at the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale McDonald’s Invitational Meet this past weekend.
Shalaine Phaup, a sophomore from Henderson, Ky., claimed her first collegiate win with a personal record in the 5000-Meter Run. She posted a winning time of 18:56.06.
Among the other highlights for the track team were:
•Christy Tracy, a freshman from Martin, set a personal record in the shot put during her first collegiate competition with a 9.96 meter (32 feet) throw.
•The 4 x 400m relay team (Angelina Gracian, Candice Lampkin, Latoshua Johns and Jeanette Halfacre) ran faster than it did all of last year. The four turned in a combined time of 4:12.69.
•Sherese Smith, a senior from Memphis, turned out to be the Skyhawks’ fastest sprinter running the 55m dash in 7.77 and the 200m in 28.68.
