Track prepares for OVC meet

The UTM track team is making progress. At the recent Southern Illinois Open in Carbondale, the team identified strengths and weaknesses and most of all the team members recorded their best times of the indoor season.

Shalaine Phaup set a new UT Martin record in the 5000 with a time of 18:40.09.

Phaup obliterated the old record of 18:54.87, which was established by Dorothy Denko in 1995. The time netted Phaup a third-place finish overall.

Katie Mirgliotta established a record of 12.80m in the weight throw. This was the first time a UT Martin athlete had competed in this event.

Angelina Gracian finished 12th by improving her 800 season-best by seven seconds. She recorded a time of 2:2.40.

Sherese Smith led the sprint crew with times of 7.74 and 28.28 in the 55m and 200m dashes.

"This meet was a good indication of where we are at this stage of the indoor season," said UT Martin track coach Jason McKinney.

"We identified our strengths and weaknesses, and we will work on them until we compete in the conference championships."

The track team will compete this weekend in Charleston, Illinois in the OVC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

It looks like they will have a strong competitive handle in the meet.
