’Tide rolls Skyhawk soccer team


Tennessee-Martin held visiting University of Alabama scoreless at halftime but could not hold on as the Crimson Tide put up a three-goal second half effort for the 3-0 win.

The Skyhawks finish the regular season with a 9-6-3 record while Alabama finishes with a 12-6-2 slate.

UT Martin will continue play in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, Nov. 8 -10 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The Shyhawks, who finished third in the final standings, will play second seeded Eastern Illinois at 4 p.m., Friday. Eastern Illinois finished the season 10-6-2 and 4-1-1 in the OVC.

The Panthers beat UT Martin 1-0, Oct. 25. The winner of the UT Martin - EIU match will play the winner of the Southeast Missouri - Tennessee Tech match for the conference championship, Nov. 10.

The first half of the match was a defensive battle, with Alabama and UT Martin combining for just 12 shots in the half.

The period ended with neither team able to score a goal.

Alabama came out firing in the second half, picking up its first goal of the match at 58:14. Kylie Boyd dribbled through the Skyhawk defense for a goal. Katie Holzaphel followed up 11 minutes later with a goal off a deflection from UT Martin goalkeeper Caryn Scheufler.

Katie French sealed up the game for the Crimson Tide with an unassisted goal at 81:13 for the win.

With 11 saves in the match, Scheufler ties her season-high for the Skyhawks. Laura Lowman tended goal for the Crimson Tide, picking up six saves in the match.

“The first half, we played great," said UT Martin coach Nathan Pifer. “We just got caught on our heels too much in the second half. We also should have finished some of our chances in the first half.”

Dani Myrick and Tavi Renier had three shots each for the Skyhawks. Holtzapfel led the Crimson Tide with six shots.

Looking forward to the OVC Tournament, coach Pifer said, “If we can play like we did in the first half today, we’ll do well. It is just a matter of leaving it all out on the field.”
