The 'Crew' speaks out

Published (Volume 75, No. 8)

Who are “the Crew?”

Thugs? You’ve got to be kidding me! Trouble Shooters? Not in your wildest dreams!

Gang Members? Gangs have been out of style!  Then, who are “the Crew.” The Crew is just a group of guys who have been here at UTM, semester after semester, and are still surviving.

We have known each other since 2000 and some before that.  Believe it or not, we’re friends. No matter what happens, we are here for each other.

Some people refer to us as “Gang Member Wannabes.” We have been friends since 2000, why weren’t we gang members then.

Nothing has changed. Maybe because now you might see three or four of us together at a time. We walk to class together and we stay in the same dorm.

This is not a huge campus, and we are not the only people who have their own crew. Maybe it is because we wear white T-shirts? “It’s hot!”, and white is cool.

We really would appreciate it if people would not refer to us as being a gang. Please stop affiliating us with everything bad that happens on this campus.

Sure it is a lot of us, but that doesn’t mean we’re causing trouble. Then you say we throw gang signs.

Maybe, if you ask, then you will see that the sign we throw are wings, meaning that we must have guardian angels because we’ve been here this long.

Plus, we are still fly, still tight and still surviving.  We are sorry if we have offended any greek organization by the throwing of our sign.

There is no harm intended. We are not in college to start any problems.

We are here for education and possibly to have a little fun along the way. College is not easy and sometimes you need a little help. So, Chris, Marco, Desmond, Carl, Carlton, Brandon, Anthony, Antonio, John, Cameron, Kelon, Bryant, Bobby, Robert, Vannie, Mitchell, Reggie, Sherrod, Marvin, Marcus, Lawrence, Jermi (graduated and playing professional basketball), Tremaine, (new crew) and myself, Lemmie.

Keep helping each other and keep holding it down.

Because we are going to graduate.  “Crew Out”
