Tennis teams split matches

The University of Tennessee at Martin men's tennis team defeated host Southern Indiana University this past Saturday, 5-4.

UTM won only two of the six singles matches but won all three doubles matches.

UTM's freshman Ben Hatchwell and sophomore Daniel McGuire both won in singles play.

The double's matches were played under NCAA Division II rules. This means a team which wins a doubles match receives one point for each win. Normally, the Skyhawks play under NCAA Division I rules, where you must win two out of the three doubles matches to receive a point.

The doubles team of sophomore Adolfo Anzola and junior Gustavo Anzola won its doubles match, 9-8. McGuire and sophomore Oltion Mollaymeri won 8-2, while Hatchwell and senior Lucas Tregansin won 8-5.

The Skyhawks take this weekend off, but both the men and women's teams will be at the St. Jude Target House Saturday. The Target House is a place St. Jude's Children's Hospital patients to stay.

Target House is for patients receiving care from 90 days to three years. The multimillion-dollar facility was a gift from Target Stores and celebrities such as Tiger Woods, and Amy Grant.

"This is a great opportunity for our kids," said Dennis Taylor, UTM tennis coach. "We always try to go down there every year."

With an international team, the Skyhawk players see children from all over the world and spend time with them.

UTM will get back into action March 12th at Samford in Ohio Valley Conference action.

The University of Tennessee at Martin women's tennis team lost to Belmont, 4-3, Friday in Nashville.

"It was a disappointing loss," said Dennis Taylor, UTM tennis coach. "We have a much better team than this."

Senior Ana Bakran, sophomore Jeanne DeWet and freshman Sari Nortje picked up wins in singles action.

The team of DeWet and junior Gayatri Ramesh won the doubles match 9-8.

"We had some bad luck," said Taylor. "But it was a good match for us and hopefully we can learn from our loss."

Belmont won three of the first four matches in singles action to take a commanding lead.

UTM enters Ohio Valley Conference action 2 p.m. Friday, March 12 at Samford University.
