Tennis teams fall to Tech in OVC matches


The UTM men's and women's tennis team both suffered 7-0 setbacks to host Tennessee Tech in Cookeville Wednesday afternoon.

The Skyhawk women gave up a point at No. 6 singles and had to default in the No. 3 doubles match. Jeanne De Wet battled Tech's Anita Obando to three sets in the No. 3 singles match, before falling, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

The Skyhawk women are now 2-11 overall and 1-3 in the OVC. In men's action, the Skyhawks also suffered a 7-0 loss. The Skyhawks played without Gustavo Anzola who was sidelined with an injury. Daniel McGuire took Tech's Will Chappell to three sets in the No. 4 singles match.

In doubles action, the Skyhawk duo of Marten Tamla and Will Taylor defeated Tennessee Tech's Michele Panzeri and Roy Cuesta, 8-3 in the No. 3 doubles match.

The Skyhawk men are now 3-11 overall and 1-2 in the OVC. The UTM men and women will play OVC matches this weekend, April 5 and 6, at Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State. The UTM women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to visiting Murray State Tuesday afternoon at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex. Ana Bakran won the lone singles match for the Skyhawks with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Murray State's Annette Steen in a No. 4 singles match.

Bakran and Eleanor Shearman defeated Melissa Spencer and Jaclyn Leeper in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-5. However, the Skyhawks lost the doubles point because it had to default the No. 3 match.

The ending score was Murray State University with 6 and UTM with 1 point.
