Student’s tires slashed by ex-boyfriend

A UTM student had her tires slashed by an ex-boyfriend after breaking up on April 22.

A UTM student parked her car in McCord parking lot at 9 p.m. and went to her dorm room. According to a UTM Public Safety report the ex-boyfriend Mario McElrath, 20, of Union City came to the female’s dorm room at approximately 10:30 p.m. wanting to be let in.

When she refused to let him in he stated, " I wonder what time you are leaving to go home tomorrow," and began to laugh as he was departing. Collins returned to her car at approximately 12:15 a.m. where she noticed that her right front and right rear tires were both flat. Upon closer inspection she discovered that both tires had been punctured with a sharp object.

UTM Police were dispatched to the scene at 2:03 a.m. where Collins told officers "at 1:37 am, McElrath sent her a text message saying, he was sorry for damaging her tires."
UTM police later learned that McElrath was banned from the university on April 2, 2002, and did not receive the proper permission required for him to be on campus property at the time of the incident.

A warrant was served on McElrath and he is scheduled to appear in Weakley County General Sessions Court on May 12.
