Students react to elections

A few UTM students were willing to share their feelings about the outcome of the elections on the lottery and liquor by the drink Wednesday afternoon.

Ashley Tharpe, a sophomore Biology major from Greenfield, said that she felt the lottery was necessary to help in decreasing taxes and to help in aiding higher education funding.

Justin Bowden, a junior Communications major from Jackson, also said that he understood the moral conflicts but looked objectively at the economic state that Tennessee is in. He concluded that the state did need a lottery for revenue even though it is offensive to some.

Whitney White, a senior Elementary Education major from Dyersburg, and Jenny Hayes, a sophomore Business major from Bradford, both agreed that the lottery was not right for the state.

Hayes agreed by saying that she knows the issue has moral disagreements behind it but thinks it will help by creating jobs and revenue even though it may not be morally correct.

White went on to say that it would be nice if the state could follow through with the promised benefits of a lottery but she doubted it.

Brandon Chapman, a senior Agriculture/Business major, said, “Liquor by the drink is great.”

He along with others supported it but there were some in doubt.

Anna Smothers, a sophomore Nursing major from Huntingdon, said that she could see both sides but has no problem with liquor by the drink as long as the laws are upheld such as being 21 to buy the drink.
