Students need to support the SAC

I do not believe I could even begin to count the number of times I have had someone tell me that the SAC should bring bigger acts to UTM after I tell them I am on the Executive Council. With this, I agree. We should have huge names performing here for UTM’s student body. There should be concerts here that sell out in less than a week.

Just imagine what it could be like: getting out of bed and standing in line at 8 a.m. with the hopes of getting great seats for the band of your choice.

Whether your preference is Eve, Tool, Stone Temple Pilots, LL Cool J, Aerosmith, Counting Crows, No Doubt, Linkin Park, O-Town, Sevendust, Dashboard Confessional, DMX, Eminem, Faith Hill or Sheryl Crow - you could get the chance to see a great show. Wouldn’t it be magnificent?

It could most definitely happen, but on one condition. You people as the student body have to show the SAC that you want these events to happen. We base all of our decisions on how much support is shown from the students. Basically: no support, no show.

The SAC does not get enough support to risk thousands of student dollars on concerts that could turn out to be a flop.

Think about some of the shows in the past. Did you go? If you did, were there many people there? I doubt it.

Fuel was a huge success when they played, but the 112 and Nappy Roots concert did not even fill half the seats from what I saw. Dare I mention the Better than Ezra show that was free?

Anyone who was there knows how poor the attendance was at it.

Recently, we tried to get 2000 students to commit to a ticket to see Dave Matthews perform. I understand that there was not much notification and there was only a three day period to commit, but I honestly cannot see how we had less than 200 students to swipe their cards.

I find it quite hard to believe that such a small number of people of the 5000+ students we have were willing to commit to a ticket. I find it rather saddening that such few people turned out to support a Dave Matthews show.

Think of it in terms of your favorite performer. The SAC has decided that we are going to try to get this show to happen, but we need to make sure 2000 students will buy a ticket. You get overwhelmed with excitement and just thinking about the intensity of the show fills you from head to toe with anticipation.

The deadline arrives and only 193 students agreed to charge a ticket to see this performer. Would it not crush your soul to know that so few people were willing to commit to tickets to see what you believe would be one the best performances to hit this area? There went a great show right out the window.

The SAC puts on events for the students. We rate an event’s success by the amount of student participation/attendance. If you as a student would like to see a huge act here at UTM, show the SAC some support. Scan your card for a concert that we’re trying to get. Attend the performers we do have, even if you don’t have a burning passion to see them. You would be surprised at how well some bands can put on a live show.

Come out and show us some support. The more support we get from students, the more confident we will be in getting bigger acts here at UTM.

Oh, and if you are one who does not show us support, then don’t complain. To those few of you who scanned your cards, thanks. We truly do appreciate the support.
