On Thursday, August 22, several UTM students participated in the Cafe House Open Mic and Karaoke night held outside between the UC and Clement.
The crowd began small but soon increased in size as the night went on.
The event began with performances by students from the audience. First to grace the stage were Jared Powelson on vocals and guitar and Michael McLemore on keyboard, who performed a half-hour set with original songs and covers.
Songs the duo covered were “Karma Police” by Radiohead, “Long December” by The Counting Crows and “Everlong” by Foo Fighters.
A crowd favorite from the duo was The Beatles hit “Hey Jude.” Powelson had the audience join in on the last chorus of the song.
Justin Smith, a freshman pre-physical therapy major from Martin, said about his first Open Mic night “that for one guy, Jared Powelson is entertaining.”
Next to the stage were Travis Flemming and Clint Wilbanks singing a humorous song they learned about a half hour prior called “Naked Sorority Girls.”
The song was a mock of the stereotypical “sorority girl” that is seen in movies and on television. After seeing their performance, Smith jokingly said, “They are the two greatest performers in the world and I wish I was in their band.”
The song was a smash hit with the audience and left them begging for more.
Some people came for different reasons. Mark McKee, a senior geography major from Dyersburg, brought his younger sister along to the event to show her some of the various events UTM has to offer students.
He said he the reason why he came his first open mic night was “to see people mess up but these people turned out to be really good.”
The final part of the event was karaoke. The highlight of the karaoke portion of the night was SAC Executive Chair Lia Jo Fisher pulling five random guys from the audience to sing the B-52s hit “Love Shack.”
The five guys soaked up the attention of being on stage and bathed in the attention they received afterward. The performance was enjoyed by all.
The next Cafe House will be at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17 outside the UC.
Jeff Hall and Taft Bradley peformed during the SAC Cafe House Open Mic and Karaoke Night. They did a lip sync to a rap song and entertained the student audience that evening.
