Student wins award for Web site design

Daniel Petty, a senior geography major at UTM, has recently been honored with a national award for his website about his hometown of Greenfield, Tenn.

Places Online, a service of the Association of American Geographers, awards some of the best website creations in the field of geography.

They honored Petty at the annual meeting of the Association in Philadelphia on March 19.

“I wasn’t able to attend the meeting, but I am certainly happy to receive the award for my site,” said Petty.

Petty decided to create his website on Greenfield for a class project in a Geography 202 .

The site includes information about the town's history and growth, then and now photographs of the town, reference maps of the area, and a guestbook where site visitors can leave feedback. Since the site’s creation in December 2002, it has received over 5,600 hits and over 70 guests have written a message about the site in the guestbook.

Petty’s work in creating and running this site has been noticed by more than just his fellow geographers.

He has also been recognized with awards or approvals from design sites such as Mackey Web Design, Deco Website Awards, Heritage of Perm, and BTDesign.
