Student involved in altercation now faces charges of assault

A dispute between two females that took place on April 2, has led to one female being arrested and charged with assault.

On April 3, Gerteze Cotton, 20, of Memphis called the Office of Public Safety and reported that she had been assaulted the night before by Dawana Abram, 19, of Brownsville.

Cotton told officers that while she was attempting to escort Abram from her room, Abram struck her in the face. The blow allegedly caused Cotton's glasses to fly off her face and her lip to swell. Cotton also told police that the fight continued until friends broke up the conflict.

The next day officers made contact with Abram who stated she went to Cotton's room to ask about a mutual friend and that Cotton was verbally abusive to her. The police report also indicates that Abram told officers that she later returned to Cotton's room.

When she returned to Cotton's room, Abram says she was pushed out the door. Abram then told Cotton to not push her but Cotton continued to push. Abram tells police that she then pinned Cotton on the bed and was soon pulled off of her by some friends.

Then Abram says that she struck Cotton after Cotton hit her in the face. In the police report Abram is stated to have said that the two continued to hit one another until friends broke up the incident.

Abram was charged with assault and was referred to Weakley County General Sessions Court based on the complaint filed by Cotton.
