Stevens marimbas his way into UTM

The performer hailed by Time magazine as “the world’s greatest classical marimbist” will perform at UTM to conclude the UTM Art Council’s 2002-03 season.

World-renowned marimbist Leigh Howard Stevens will perform at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 16 in the Watkins Auditorium.

The performance is open to the public. Following the concert, a free marimba clinic will be offered featuring Stevens at 7 p.m. in Room 142 of the Fine Arts Building.

Stevens’ repertoire ranges from Renaissance music and the Preludes and Fugues of J.S. Bach, to original marimba works written especially for him by contemporary composers.

His book on the subject of four-mallet marimba technique, Method and Movement, redefined mastery of the marimba.

Tickets to the 3 p.m. performance are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children.

Individual tickets are sold at the door only. All UTM season subscribers and area arts series subscribers including Union City; Dyersburg; Paducah, Ky.; and Murray, Ky. receive free admission.
