Volleyball team plans for season opener

After eight games on the road, the UTM volleyball team will come home for its home opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The Skyhawks will play host to Southern Illinois University. The Salukis are 6-2 going into the weekend matches. UTM is currently 3-3 on the season with two conference matches planned for the weekend.

Threats chosen for Audie Murphy Award

Joseph Threats, a defensive tackle on the UTM football team was presented the Week 3 Audie Murphy Award. The award goes to the Skyhawk football player who best represents his school and team and who went above the call of duty in either the last football game or during the week of practice.

Threats is a 6-1, 275-pound, freshman defensive tackle from Port Arthur, Texas. He prepped at Lincoln High School in Port Arthur.

Harris named Player of the Week

UTM Skyhawk and Martin native Brent Harris has been named the Ohio Valley Conference's Football Special Teams Player of the Week.

Harris, a sophomore place kicker who has served as one of the Skyhawks three team captains for the first two games of the season, kicked 37- and 51-yard field goals in Thursday's 33 6 setback to Tusculum.

Harris' 51-yard field goal with 14:26 to play in the second quarter was his career best. The field goal was two yards short of tying a school record set in 1976 by Mickey Hamilton and 1972 by Randy Barnes.

Harris is four-for-five on the year in field goals. He has kicked field goals from 36, 26, 37 and 51 yards this season. His lone miss was a 47-yard attempt against Tusculum.

Harris' 51-yard field goal is the longest this season among OVC teams.
