OVC Player of the Week UT Martin senior Amy Watson was named Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The official announcement was made Tuesday afternoon by the league office. Watson, a 5-11 forward from Lynchburg, Tenn., helped lead the Skyhawks to upset wins over Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. She averaged 21.5 points a game and converted eight-of-16 field attempts and ended with 18 points against Morehead State. She then went nine-of-21 from the field and six-of-seven from the free throw line for 25 points and seven rebounds against Eastern Kentucky, who came to Martin with a perfect 6-0 OVC record. She added five assists, three steals and one blocked shot for the week and became the eighth Skyhawk to top the 1,000-point plateau. Watson scored that 1,000th point with her first basket against Morehead State this past Saturday night. The Skyhawks sport a 7-11 overall record and a 4-3 OVC worksheet. The Skyhawks return to action Thursday, Jan. 30 when they travel to Clarksville to face Austin Peay, who currently leads the league with a 6-0 worksheet.

Volleyball Team Makes School History The final 2002 NCAA Volleyball RPI rankings are out and the University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks are the highest ranked Ohio Valley Conference team and the highest ranked Tennessee school. The Skyhawks are ranked 67th out of 313 Division I teams. In the OVC the next highest ranked team is Southeast Missouri Stat at 102. In Tennessee, the next highest ranked team to the Skyhawks is the University of Tennessee, Knoxville at 68. Memphis is ranked 171, while Middle Tennessee State is ranked 206. The Skyhawks finished this past season with a 24-6 worksheet. They won the OVC regular season championship (15-1) and the OVC tournament. Along with the tournament championship came a bid the NCAA’s Championship Tournament. The Skyhawks lost 3-0 to nationally ranked Nebraska in the first round of the tournament. The Skyhawks also were ranked seventh in the Midwest Regional Rankings. Both the RPI and the Midwest Regional Rankings were the highest in school history for the Skyhawks.
