Softball team wins 7 at tourney


During spring break, the Skyhawk softball team traveled to Kissimmiee, Fl., to participate in the Rebel Games tournament. The Skyhawks opened their 10-game stay with a pair of wins over Fairleigh-Dickinson and Lafayette.

The Skyhawks defeated Fairleigh-Dickinson 5-3 despite five errors.

Junior Nicole Davis, from Alpine, Calif., picked up the mound victory for the Skyhawks. She allowed three unearned runs. Junior Kristin Runyan had two hits in the game, while sophomore Emily Webb, from Hohenwald, Tenn., added a solo home run.

In Sunday's second game, junior pitcher Allison Buckley, from Wildwood, Mo., tossed a seven-inning no-hitter to record her third win of the season.

Buckley struck out four in the game and lowered her 3.71 earned run average to 2.98. She is 3-2 on the mound this season.

The Skyhawks defeated Yale, 3-2, and Columbia, 4-0, in the second day.

The Skyhawks improve to 12-7 with the two wins. Tuesday's games against Fordham and Wisconsin-Green Bay were rained out.

Buckley tossed a seven-inning no-hitter to record her third win of the season against Lafayette.

The Skyhawks rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to capture the 3-2 come-from-behind win over Yale.

Martin native Beth Buttrey singled to left field with two outs to drive in the winning run.

Davis was credited with the mound win over Yale.

Davis played a key role in the 4-0 win over Columbia. She hit a three-run, two-out home run that cleared 240 feet in dead center field.

Freshman Megan Mizell, from Vienna, Ill., was the winning Skyhawk pitcher. Mizell threw seven innings and gave up two hits.

The Skyhawks wrapped up with a 3-2 win over Colgate and a 7-2 loss to Fairfield.

Buckley allowed one earned run against Colgate and picked up the mound victory for the Skyhawks.

Sophomore Brandy Whalen drove in the winning run when she doubled to deep center field.

Davis suffered the pitching loss in the 7-2 setback to Fairfield, a team the Skyhawks beat Thursday night, 14-7.

The Skyhawks finished the week-long tournament with a 7-1 worksheet and are now 15-8 overall.

Wednesday’s games against Ole Miss were cancelled and will be rescheduled.
