Soccer team drops 4-0 decision to Southwest Missouri State


After holding out for most of the first half, the UTM soccer team could not contain host Southwest Missouri any longer as the Skyhawks took a 4-0 loss to the Bears.

This was the fourth meeting between the two teams with Southwest Missouri coming out on top every time.

The Skyhawks played a defensive first half, only taking three shots, but keeping the game scoreless until the last minute. With 50 seconds left in the half, the Bears' Tracy Allen picked up a deflection from the corner and scored the first goal of the match.

UTM was able to come back and hold out for the first eight minutes of the second half but at 53:01 Sarah Guenther scored from 25 yards out to give Southwest Missouri a 2-0 lead. The Bears would go on to score two more times in the next 13 minutes.

The Skyhawks finished the game with 14 shots to the Bears' 29. Rachel Callahan, Sherrie Weeks and Christina Moore had three shots each in the match.

Caryn Scheufler spent 70 minutes in the goal for the Skyhawks, picking up eight saves.

Freshman Megan Dempsey finished out the game, ending with three saves. Southwest Missouri goalkeeper Alexis Stormo had eight saves against the Skyhawks.

The Bears improve to 2-0 on the season while UTM drops to 1-1.

The Skyhawks will be back in action against Arkansas State, 1 p.m., Sunday at Skyhawk Field in Martin. The Lady Indians are currently 2-0 on the season with wins over McNeese State and Alabama A&M.
