Snow, ice prove treacherous, claim life of UTM freshman


Emily Ann Benton, 18, an Education major from Springfield, died Tuesday, April 13, of injuries she suffered in a car wreck.

Benton died at Henry County Medical Center in Paris. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported that she lost control of her car as a result of snow on Highway 97 in Stewart County. Her Ford Focus spun and was struck by an oncoming car.

Services will be held Saturday, April 17, in the Cakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home with the Revs. Bill McCabe and Rick Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Williams Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include her parents, Rick and Carol Benton; one brother, Joshua Benton; and her grandparents, Earl and Carrole Benton and James C. "Cliff" Underwood, all of Springfield.

Benton was a member of Williams Chapel Baptist Church.

According to an obituary in the Robertson County Times, she loved children and was studying to become a schoolteacher.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
