Skyhawks thrash Sports Reach


The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team made its 2002-03 debut with a 106-72 victory over visiting Sports Reach, a traveling exhibition team, Sunday afternoon in Skyhawk Arena. Six players scored in double-figures for Tennessee-Martin.

“I was encouraged by what we did this afternoon on both ends of the floor,” said UT Martin head coach Bret Campbell. “I was particularly pleased on the offensive end with how well we shared the basketball.”

Newcomer Earl Bullock, a junior transfer from Lineville, Ala., led the Skyhawk scorers with 20 points. He knocked down six of 10 three-pointers. Joey Walker netted 17 points, senior Okechi Egbe canned 16 points, Jeremy Kelly tossed in 13, while Kenan Asceric and David Wilkerson tossed in a dozen points each. The Skyhawks shot 49 percent from the field and 82 percent at the free throw line.

The Skyhawks had 23 assists in the game. J.C. Howe and Jeremy Kelly had five assists each.

Former Vanderbilt standout Drew Maddux led Sports Reach with 13 points. Jeremiah Hamlet added 10 points. Sports Reach shot 39 percent from the field and 84 percent from the free throw line. Jim Farmer, a former SEC standout at Alabama and the 20th overall draft pick in the 1987 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks, added six points to the Sports Reach total.

Sports Reach is 1-3 against Ohio Valley Conference teams.

Sports Reach defeated Tennessee State Friday 90-85. Earlier this month, Sports Reach lost to Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.

The Skyhawks will officially open their season Friday, Nov. 22 at St Louis University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
