Skyhawks take three at Frost Classic


The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team walked away with three wins from the Frost Classic at Chattanooga this past weekend. The Skyhawks leave the tournament with a 7-5 record.

The Skyhawks defeated UT-Chattanooga, North Texas State and Buffalo University.

The two losses were to Marshall University, a nationally ranked team, and Wisconsin University.

The Skyhawks took advantage of Chattanooga's four errors in the field, defeating the Mocs 5-2.

Freshman Fallon Lowery led the Skyhawks offensively with two singles.

Junior Nicole Davis was the winning pitcher for the Skyhawks with eight strikeouts.

In the second game of the tournament, the Skyhawks got a quick jump on Marshall University scoring six runs in the first inning.

Jennifer Young had a lead-off double to start the inning. Kristin Hogan reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice, moving Young to third base.

Kristin Runyan reached on an error to load the bases for Davis. Davis stepped up and hit a grand slam to put the Skyhawks up 4-1.

Marshall rallied to beat the Skyhawks, 10-6. The Thundering Herd out hit the Skyhawks 9-5.

The second day of tournament play, the Skyhawks had an eight-inning battle with Wisconsin University.

Wisconsin was up 2-0 by the third inning. The Skyhawks quickly retaliated by evening the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third.

The Skyhawks went to the eighth inning tied at 4-4 but the Wisconsin offensive was too much for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks were defeated 11-6.

Lowery led the Skyhawks offensively. She finished the game with three hits in four at bats.

In the fourth game of the tournament, the Skyhawks defeated North Texas State 5-1. The Skyhawks totaled nine hits for the game.

Runyan and sophomore Brandy Whalen had four of the nine hit for the Skyhawks.

Freshman pitcher Megan Mizell was the winning pitcher for the Skyhawks. Mizell had seven strikeouts and allowed five hits and one run.

In the third day of the tournament, the Skyhawks defeated Buffalo University, 2-1. The Skyhawks went into an eight-inning battle with the Bulls.

Whalen led the Skyhawks offensively, hitting in the game-winning run for the Skyhawks. Whalen had two of the four hits for the Skyhawks.

Junior Allison Buckley was the winning pitcher for the Skyhawks. Buckley pitched eight innings and had five strikeouts, allowed three hits and one run.

The Skyhawks will return home for a doubleheader at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 3, against Western Kentucky.

The Skyhawks will travel this weekend to Louisville, Ky., to play in a tournament.
