Skyhawks take Saint Louis with 6-5 win


A three-run sixth inning for UTM gave the Skyhawks a 6-5 advantage over visiting Saint Louis in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon. The game was the home-opener for Tennessee-Martin.

Jake Friederich led off the first inning for Saint Louis with a triple to center field.

He followed up to score the first run of the game after Ryon Murphy singled to left field, giving the Billikens a 1-0 advantage. UT Martin took the lead for the first time later in the inning. Brady Nighswonger doubled to right center and was followed up by a Bryant Jones home run to give the Skyhawks a 2-1 lead.

The Skyhawks hit some tough times in the fourth inning, giving up three runs to Saint Louis. Corey Lawson led off the inning with a home run for the Billikens to tie the game up, 2-2. Derek Muncy and Pat Steinhoff also picked up runs for Saint Louis in the inning for a 4-2 lead.

Jones scored again for the Skyhawks in the fourth inning after Kelly Davis grounded out to shortstop. Jones singled to get on base and advanced to second base on an error. He advanced to third base on Brian Jordan's strikeout.

The Billikens extended the lead in the sixth inning to 5-3 after Steinhoff scored. UTM busted out for four hits in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Nighswonger led off with a single to left field and advanced to second base on a single from Jordan.

Dan Stephens singled to right field to score Nighswonger and move Jordan to third base. Adam Salter doubled to score Stephens and Jordan to give the Skyhawks the 6-5 lead. Nighswonger and Jordan each had two hits and two runs for the Skyhawks. Steinhoff led the Billikens with two hits and one run.

Jonathan Spiceland started the game for UT Martin on the mound.

He pitched four innings, picking up three strikeouts and giving up seven hits. Donnie Corey picks up the win after his six strikeouts and five hits in five innings pitched.

Zach Placzek started for Saint Louis and had eight strikeouts. He gave up eight hits. Joe Buehler finished the game for the Billikens. He had two strikeouts and did not give up any hits.
